Environmentalists rejoice!
Today Barack Obama ordered the government to quit "standing in the way" of tougher emissions standards for California and other states. He said "for the sake of our security, our economy and our planet, we must have the courage and commitment to change". What the heck is he talking about? At a time when the automakers are requesting billions of dollars in 'bailout' funds, Barack wants to push even tougher standards on them. Great idea! Now that's really going to put America in a more secure position. I'll never understand how tougher emissions standards equates to better security, or how they will affect the economy (except in a negative manner) but remember change is what we wanted, and change is what we get!

Honestly, if the auto makers are asking for a bailout, then the government has every right to put more restrictions on them if they suddenly become the biggest investor in the industry. If I was loaning someone billions of dollars, I would expect to at least have a say in what's done with it.
Plus, putting stricter emissions standards into place means that it becomes the job of the technology sector to come up with a cheap way doing it. Not only does this create more jobs (why not retrain some of the younger auto workers with the bailout money?) but we have new products that can easily be marketed to consumers in Europe as well. And even though a direct correlation has yet to be proven between carbon emissions and global warming, I'm all for less pollution. Every time this valley gets an inversion, hospital admittance doubles, which empirical data enough for me.
If all else fails, we'll save money on gas in the long run. I don't know anyone who would object to having a little more money in their wallet.
Really? Do you believe that the government is "loaning" money to the auto industry? Sorry, but I just have to laugh at that. Have you heard the word nationalizing being used a lot lately? Wonder why? There is more than one way of accomplishing that, and "loaning" money and then coming up with more "standards or requirements" that need to be adhered to is just one method. By the way, you are loaning them money, it's your money the government is using! FYI: 650 scientists presented a paper at the latest 'global warming' conference that stated there was no such thing and in fact the planet has been cooling for the last five years, but guess what? They were totally ignored.
